OK so you say you want to start your own business. How excited and yet scary at the same time. Being a serial entrepreneur, I wanted to shae a few tips that I have learned along the way. E-Myth by Michael Gerber along with a couple of mentors (and listening to others) helped me to NOT make some of the usual mistakes. So take this advice as you go forward.
- Create a budge-You will have to spend money to get your business launched. So whether you hire someone so that you can get out and market or you place ads in various media sources, you have to get the word out. Starting a business is NEVER-“Build it and they will come”. This is not “Field of Dreams”! It is real life, real business, real money so treat it that way.
- Hire Someone-It may seem crazy but you will need help pretty quickly, especially if you listened to Number 1. OK maybe you are lucky and you have the type of business that you sit on the computer all day designing and creating artwork-that is awesome and you are a rarity. Most of us have to make it, sell it, deliver it and follow up with our customers. It is difficult to do all of these and remain sane and keep relationships and a quasi -balance in life. One of the biggest mistakes Entrepreneurs make is thinking they can do it all themselves.
- Hiring based on Cost-The old adage “you get what you pay for” comes into mind with this one. Low cost employees, virtual assistants, consultants are usually low-cost for good reason. More than likely, they are inexperienced, unskilled or unreliable. This is not a good combination for you in trying to get your business off of the ground (or to keep it up). Cheaper is NEVER better! Not only will this mentality bum you out, it will also make you lose traction and time by having to start over.
There are hundreds of other tips that I will share later. Listen to my show on demand at KVGI Radio where I cover this topic in more depth. Also, listen every Tuesday from 11-Noon where I cover various areas of business and Common Sense issues in an Uncommon Sense World. The show is Texas Talk Live with Lezlee.
